Question about bittorrent clients or whatever - do they share your files?

Excuse my ignorance. But I am curious, do these "bitorrent clients" things like "utorrent" that I use to download torrents - do they share anything on my computer to other people? Thanks!
I don't care if the torrents I downloaded are shared, I mean do they have access to my personal files?
