Question about DVRs and Directv?

I am wanting to get a DVR. Our provider is Directv and their basic DVR is $100. But they also have a $10 monthly Advanced Receiver Service fee for all their DVRs. My question is, are there any DVRs out there that do not require me to pay monthly just to record a few shows?
