this might sound like a stupid question but why do Jewish people not believe in or recognise Jesus Christ as the son of God?

There are several Jewish books as well as websites that deal with that question. One such article is at the URL below.
Specifically and in brief, Jews don't recognize Jesus as "the son of God" because of the exclusivity of the expression. In fact, Judaism teaches (and Jews believe) that ALL Jews are the sons of God, so why would anybody claim Jesus was anything special?
The assertion that supports the identification of ALL Jews as being the sons of God is in Exodus, where God told Moses to tell Pharaoh, "Israel is MY (God's) son, My firstborn; let My son go that he may serve Me."
Other than that, Jews know (not 'believe,' but KNOW) that bodily accidents do no apply to God. God doesn't sleep, or stub His toe, or sire offspring upon women.
God would CERTAINLY not sire offspring upon the wife of somebody else, as was Mary when she supposedly conceived Jesus. If you read the book of Matthew, it is made clear that Mary was the wife of Joseph. This is made plain by the verse that says Joseph wanted to divorce Mary when he found out she was pregnant and he knew he himself was not the father of her baby. God's Law forbids adultery, so God Himself would not violate that Law.
