Question about skype. What is it??? :)?

Hey, I was just wondering what skype is.
I know its when you can video chat with someone using your webcam, but I'm wondering something else.
If someone calls you when you aren't logged onto skype, what happens? Do I still hear the ring on my computer or does it say something like 'one missed call'?

Tell me everything you can think of about skype please! I really want to know what happens if someone calls you...whether or not youre online.

If I remember correctly, it is just like when someone calls your cell phone when it's turned off, and they just leave a message.
