I posted this because I keep getting downvoted when I post that ferrets smell. I'm not particularly bothered about the down votes, because I'd rather that people had my opinion on the downsides of keeping ferrets, as I don't want people buying them then getting rid of them.
But seriously, people keep saying if you keep your ferrets clean they don't smell. Well, Mine have their litter trays cleaned out morning and evening. They are currently on the raw diet however I previously had them on a dry diet, so its not that. They DO have their scent glands but anybody who is really knowledgeable about ferrets knows that that shouldn't make a difference. Their glands are not blocked, and I do not over-wash them. I have tried Bi-odor but it doesn't make a jot of difference. I don't mind at all, I like the smell of clean ferret, I love my girls and I wouldn't sell them for a million bucks. But the fact remains that they DO smell.
So why is it that only MY ferrets smell? All other ferret owners insist that ferrets don't smell if you keep them clean. My girls are healthy, cared for, well fed and clean, but they do have a definite and strong odour to them, I brought one of my girls into the living room today and my friend could smell her from about 4 feet away. When I put her back in her cage I could smell where she had been lying on my shoulder.
I am firmly of the opinion that you get "used" to the smell of ferrets rather than them not smelling, because my ferrets smell no different than any of the others I have met, they all have a strong, musky odour. Yet ferret owners seem to insist that they are not smelly animals?
So I guess the question is, do you think your ferrets smell? And why do you get so offended when other people say that they do? Because in my experience, every single ferret I've met smells. For me its part of their charm lol, stinky little mad honey bears that they are!
