I'm going to school right now to be a vet tech, and I've wanted this career for as long as I can remember. However, I'm also a single mom to an eight month old little girl, so my grades have been slipping quite a bit lately.
Long story short, the school I'm going to has a very selective vet tech program (only 25 students will get in), and I'm trying really hard to decide whether I want to cut down on my classes and go part-time, then just apply to the program next year and work as a vet assistant over the summer, or just try my hardest now to get in, even if I fail in the end.
The reason I'm thinking about this so much is because I want so badly to have a good, stable career before my daughter gets too much older, but I also don't want my GPA to suffer as a result of me going full time right now because I want to be able to write in "Dean's List" as many times as possible when it finally does come time to make my resume, and not to mention, I want to be as fully prepared for this job as possible, too.
So onto my question, do you think it would significantly help me in the long run if I were to take a year off and just work as a vet assistant?
(Should I take a year off anyways?)
Or does all the training and required externships really prepare you enough for this tough job?
(Or should I just keep trying my hardest to get in now, while I've still got all of my financial aid?)
..I hope all of that made sense, and I'd really appreciate any input on this!
