I got some baby turtles in chinatown. They were kept in horrible condition and I felt really bad for them, so I kinda bought them on impulse. I realize it was stupid.
The guy who sold them to me didn't even tell me what kind of turtle it was. I went to Petco, and one lady told me it was a red eared slider, while another said it wasn't (it looks like one though).
We did what the second lady told us to do: we filled up a tank with dirt, and put a bowl of water in there. One turtle burrowed into the dirt, while another one keeps walking around. He keeps falling into the waterdish and then he struggles and struggles to get out. The waterdish is very deep. The turtle gets out, but I really don't know if it can drown or not. I freak out really easy and I dunno if it's supposed to struggle like that, but it seems not to like the waterdish very much. The turtles were sold to me in water (but it only went up to their legs (it wasn't deep at all).
I really want to take it to a vet so that he can help me identify what type of turtle it is and what kind of conditions it's supposed to live in. There is no way I can go to a vet until next Saturday.
Should we make the waterdish more shallow? My friend's mom says if we do that it won't be able to climb back out and it will be stuck in there. We don't have a real waterdish, we just used some container (I will buy it a waterdish asap).
Are there any other turtles out there that resemble red eared sliders?
