Questions from a Mardi Gras newbie???!?

Hello,
I'm planning on going to Mardi Gras this year. I was wondering, when should I be in New Orleans? Are there events all weekend, leading up to Tues Feb 21? Would it be okay to arrive Monday? If I stay after Tuesday, say to explore New Orleans (I've never been), will it still be incredibly crowded?

Anyone have an recommendations on where to stay?

Let me just add that you should be looking for a hotel NOW! Many are surely already booked for Mardi Gras. You will also find that many will only sell you a four night package, so just staying a night or two...or arriving on Monday...could be a problem.

The best parades ARE the weekend before fat tuesday! So get here the thursday or friday before. A lot people leave on tuesday and wednesday so it will still be crowded but not as much as the weekend before.
