Qui Gon Jinn and The Force?

Okay we've all seen The Phantom Menace and watched the epic battle between Qui-Gon/Obi Wan and Darth Maul but I've always wondered if Qui-Gon was the first to learn how to become one with the force then why didn't he disappear?, Obi Wan in A New Hope disappears right after Vader struck him down
