radio reception central west new south wales?

I live in central west new south wales and wish to access am radio in Sydney without using the internet, even though I have internet but find it distracts me from my internet work, plus the volume is too low. I'm thinking short wave radio. Any cheap suggestions. The local radio is rubbish.

See if you have any ham radio operators in your area and ask them what stations you could pick up before buying one as I have a feeling you would be disappointed with the format of most stations. Do you have satellite radio there?
