The Red Herring's death throes have gone from the amusing, to the dramatic, to the tedious. (Put us, and the storied tech title itself, out of our misery already.) There's been no real news for days now. So let's dig out an old story about Alex Vieux, the magazine's publisher. You knew that Vieux was a penny-pincher, paying some of the lowest editorial rates in tech publishing, and sometimes missing payroll. But at least Vieux, a Napoleonic figure, suffered along with his troops, no? Only kidding: the imperious publisher threatened to dock $500 from any employee who dared use his "executive bathroom".
