I have a paper due in less than 6 hours and I'm freaking out. The paper is on what 2 things does the Red Hunting Hat represent for Holden. I've been on every study guide known to man, but no one can explain it enough for me to understand. Most say individuality but I dont get why, and I'm kinda of stuck on the 2nd one, could it be it represents a security net for him....PLEASE HELP

Well, I think that cap was unfashionable and that may be why it symbolizes individuality. I think he mentions that early on. If you remember, his sister gave him the hat back at the end and that was a breakthrough for him. It was the point of the novel when the reader finally knew he would be ok. Maybe it does symbolize comfort and security. If you can figure out why he gave the hat to Phoebe perhaps that can help. I personally can't remember that part. Good luck
