I would like to know just how deeply ingrained christianity and religion in general is in everyday US society?

A common complaint among atheists on R&S seems to be how religion intrudes on their lives. Also, people often describe 'coming out' as atheist, having kept the fact hidden for long periods of time.

I live in the UK, and am an atheist myself, however the above situations seem very alien to me. I have friends whom I have known for decades, and I have no idea about their religious beliefs, and likewise they know nothing of mine. Those whom I have discussed it either agree with me, or have no opinion either way about my lack of belief. It is judged as a largely personal issue.

According to statistics, the UK is still a predominantly Christian country, however I have never felt that religion is affecting the way that I live to any great degree, with the exception of celebrations such as Christmas, Easter etc, which are largely commercial in nature now anyway.

Does anyone have any examples of how their daily lives have been affected due to their lack of belief, and other peoples reaction to it?
