Repair an odometer/mileometer in a Fiat Scudo diesel van?

The van was first registered in September 2001. Are there some instructions available on how to sort out this problem i.e. a handbook or website? I have been told that the problem could be as simple as a faulty backlight bulb but that still leaves me puzzling over how best to access the area. I know that it could go to a garage but the van is the one my son uses for a business that he has just started and money is tight!

Hoping somebody might be able to help.
 
If money really is tight, just do without it. You will not put any miles on the odometer, saving value of car (dishonestly and technically illegally I must add) and you will only have to worry about your speed which becomes quite easy to judge to under 5 mph. The problem however, could reside with simply a burnt out lightbbulb, but in my experience a more common problem would be a disconnected or broken speedometer cable that goes from the speedometer to the transmission.
