when driving the left hand headlight has a tendency to flick on and off (going in to dim dipped light mode) not constantly every few seconds but it is noticeable when in main beam and dipped beam mode thinking it was a problem with the light bulb and the connector both were replaced but the problem still exists everything fits as it should, could it be a problem with the earth cable or is it something else to do with the light

Most lighting problems are caused by the earth connection corroding.
Locate the earth for the headlight clean and tighten it if that doesn't cure the problem then work away from there checking each connector in turn.
Remember not to touch the glass part of the bulb with your bare fingers as this bad for the bulb.
