It is a very weird situation at work, mainly teenagers are working there. Some of them disobeyed the rule: cell phones must be OFF during their shifts. The manager caught 2 of them when they checked their cell phones for messages while they were pretending to get water at their cubby. Despite the fact that there were notes at the schedule board "whoever's cell phone is on/vibrating/ringing during their shifts will be fired" - they did not get fired because it is apparently hard to get people who show up every day to their shift.....duh? The manager as well as the owner of the business are playing avoidance and denial. Apparently.
And, all of a sudden, approx. 2 months ago, we have a new rule: NOBODY (except the manager) is allowed to bring their cell phones into the building. No matter if it is turned off or not. You can leave it in the car and go during your ½ hr break, if you don't have a car...bad luck....you can't bring it!
I never misused my cell phone, it always was turned off, in my purse, in my cubby. And I am one of 3 adults working there for quite a while, fulltime. But the owner allows only the manager to bring his cell phone to work, even when it is on.
Is there anything I can do? I need my cell phone in my ½ hr. break to make some phone calls, I am running a tiny little business besides my full time job. And I don’t want everyone to know where I am working – for that reason I do not use the company’s business phone.
So, running to my car, making the phone calls, running back...that would cut my ½ hr. break time to actually 15 minutes or less. Or I stay in the car and eat there. Bah!
Just speaking for myself....I’m thinking about quitting, I could afford to stay home for a while, but I rather would like to get my boss some facts on the table (and keep the job, sometimes it is hell, but it is a job, well paid).
As far as I know if it is not a high security building (we are NOT!) companies can restrict the use of a cell phone but not the presence of a turned off cell phone. I talked to the manager that the boss could check every day my purse if my cell phone is off.... NO! He won’t even talk to the boss about it.
I s there anybody who can give me SERIOUS advice? Please, no advice like “you should talk to him again”... he is not interested and tells you very rudely he does not want to be bothered. Neither with speeches of integrity nor with anything else.
