2000 Ford Ranger 3.0L 4x4 130,000 . I bought this truck cheap 700 dollars, the 4wd worked and it ran, but when I bought it the reverse would not work although 1,2,3 does. Asked a friend, they said it was more than likely NOT the whole transmission b/c reverse and 1st run together and that 1st should be out with it if it was the whole transmission that needed replacing. My friend suggests it is the reverse clutch switch , not sure exactly what its called but if you can give me some reassurance it would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yea I forgot to mention, its an automatic transmission. Dunno if that makes a diff. in the diagnosis process or not but yea, lemme know sumthin.

There are 2 possible transmissions in this vehicle is it a 4 or 5 speed automatic trans.? OK if it's a 1997 or later it's a 5 spd 5R44-E transmission this has a couple of problems that are possibly fixed without a rebuild, What kind of condition is the fluid in? pink, red, dark red, tan, brown or black? Anything past tan forget it! Sonnax has a pretty good tech article about these transmissions that you should maybe read either way i don't know your skill level but it is going to take someone with someone with some auto. trans experience to perform some of these repairs! http://www.sonnax.com/system/pdfs/110/original/TS6-BW-106-109.pdf?1289926275
