RIP News of the World

The only power News International has over the political system is the power our politicians give them. Cameron believed it and tried to cosy up to them. News International backed him. But he still couldn't bring home the bacon without his new best friend. Lap dog Clegg. I'd like to see News International kicked out. But i don't think that'll happen. At least not any time soon. I think their brand will implode globally before that happens. And given the criminal investigation in the US. That's a possibility.

I know the feeling. I've argued for ages that Murdoch has far too much power, although I must admit that I'm shocked by some of the stuff that's coming to light about the police and so forth.

Well it's clear there's a pervasive thread of corruption that has spread from the Murdoch empire into the Police and politics. Which doesn't actually surprise me. The Free Masons used to have huge control over the police, politics and industry. It's happened in the past. It's happening now. It'll happen again. Remember our politicians felt it was perfectly fine to spend public money on duck houses. We're not exactly dealing with people with a sound grip on reality.

Our politicians are a rotten lot, but at least we can replace them - if only with another rotten one! They are answerable to the electorate, and they shouldn't be answerable to vested interests like Murdoch and co.

I know it's happened before, and I've no doubt that it'll happen again. The best defence against it that I can think of is a properly free and independant news media. But when the media itself becomes part of the problem then that is when we have a really serious issue.

The thing that always puzzles me is why all the corruption that Private Eye manage to uncover on a regular basis never gets covered in the daily press.

Every time I look at a copy of Private Eye, there are half a dozen or so stories of large scale corporate or political corruption that would seem to be in the public interest to have out in the open. Is it just that they're less scared of being sued than your average daily?

I've never understood that either. It may be because other newspapers are simply too idle to report these stories- how much easier just to show up to press releases and do a few light interviews than do some real investigative journalism.

I have more trust in Private Eye than any other printed UK media. It's not infallible, but when it gets it wrong it admits it straight away and isn't afraid of criticism.
