In a surprising twist, the Pittsburgh Pirates actually won a bidding war with the New York Yankees. Russell Martin, who the Yankees wanted to return to their team, instead left NYC to go to Pittsburgh to play with the Pirates.
According to reports, Martin will sign a two-year contract worth an estimated $17 million.
Last season, he hit .211 with 21 homers, 53 RBIs and a .406 slugging percentage. He was also regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in the game.
With the Pirates, Martin will immediately step into the starting lineup and try to help the team post their first winning season in 20 years.
