Sae 10w-40 motor oil for 1997 chrysler town and country.?

does it matter what brand you use. I bought Peak(performance motor oil with thermal breakdown) sae 10w-40, I went to the store and they didn't have that brand, so I got another brand called walco (deluxe sae 10w-40 motor oil) I don't want to mess my car up. I am new to driving.
 
I used to think it didnt matter and it almost cost me a rototiller engine when I used a cheap brand of oil,the engine got really hot and luckily for me it shut down.That was the first time I had used it after changing the oil.Always use a top brand oil,its just not worth the cost of an engine to try and save a dollar or two.
