I've got a pack of AAA batteries that I just got quickly from my closet downstairs. And looking at them, I just looked at the expiration date--January 2005. But I need some back-up batteries just in case if my calculator dies on my Physics test tomorrow (And the batteries seem to be close to dying).

So, in short, are they safe to use? Anything dangerous'll happen if I use them?

They're 4 AAA Alkaline batteries from Energizer, if that mattered at all.

Expired batteries tend to leak when you use them or they just leak while still in it's packaging. The liquid coming from the batteries is a toxic acid.

I suggest that you properly dispose of the batteries by going to your local battery disposal people.
