Hello,

When servicing my girlfriends car I noticed quite alot of oil on the spark plugs and around the threads. We decided to leave it for now as it wasnt a major problem, just a little mis-fire when cold. Anyway after a while the problem began to get worse as the spark plugs became covered in oil, it would mis-fire quite badly so she decided to have the work done by a friend of the family who used to be a mechanic, I don't really like messing with engines to much. She said he replaced the 'Locker Gasket' (not quite sure if thats the correct name) and the spark plugs.

After the work had been done when driving it really didn't sound the same, I don't know if thats how its supposed to sound because I've never heard it running right but there was a popping coming from the exhaust and the idle spead was all over the place. When coming up to a junction with the clutch in the revs would reduce to about 500 rmp, it was barley able to run. I previously cleaned the throttle body and idle control valve out as the idle has never been right just not this bad. It was left to go cold and when started again, the revs were barley above 500 rpm so I adjusted the rest position of the throttle cable up by one notch and then it ran brilliantly. It got her home but this morning it will not start for anything, apprently he's coming back to have a look today but we are beginning to dobt him.

Has anybody got any advice on what the problem could be? The cars only done 53k and I have a 1.3 proton which has done 104k and sounds and runs a million times better. I know French cars are complete rubbish but this is shocking for such a low amount of miles.

Any help grealy appreciated. Oh and for info, it isnt treated a as racer car but I cannot speak for the previous owners, from what I know it seems ill treatment has started this ball rolling.

Cheers,

The Rocker gasket leaked oil into the plug wells and so it was replaced - straightforward.
The oil will have damaged the plug caps and so the caps and leads all need to be replaced - it should be fine then
