Bangs: Should be below the eyebrows. This doesn't mean that you have to have them down to your nose, but they shouldn't be up by your forehead either. Some people prefer to have a blunt cut straight across the nose bridge, whereas others prefer them sideswept and covering one eye. When asking your hairdresser to give you emo-bangs use the following words: layered, side-swept/straight across, below eyebrows, covering one eye.
Layers: More important for girls than guys. Layers define your "emoness". Layers are like a metaphor for how deep and complex your little emo mind is. Your counterpart emo will like that. Plus, they work well with bangs. Ask for many, many layers, short enough for it to be spiked up with hair product, but not short enough to make you look like a porcupine on a bad day.
2 Choose your hair style. Different types of emo hair you can get:
Girls (short): For most girls who prefer short hair, this cut usually involves razoring the back so its spikey and leaving the front and sides straight 'n' long.
Girls (medium): This is the most common type of hair for girls. Shoulder length and straightened (usually); VERY layered at the top but not so much at the bottom. Hair at the base of the head hangs down straight. Bangs (duh), sideswept or blunt cut.
Girls (long): same as "Girls (medium)", except that that the end of the hair is now around chest/lower back level
Guys (short): Basically the same as girls short. Once more, you razor the back so it sticks up, but leave the front longer than at the back. Whether you want the front spikey or not is up to you
Guys (medium): You also razor the back of your hair, but this time you may prefer to mess up the back, as opposed to making it stick up. Usually, guys with medium hair prefer to keep the front part of the hair long and straight, with most of the fringe pushed over to one side and smoothed down over one eye.
3 Decide on how you want to 'style' it. Styling: Emo hair is pretty hard to maintain. Once you get the cut, it's not gonna stay up there on its own. You'll need several good hair products (see Things You'll Need) When you've got those, it's time for you to "get creative". But for those who are stuck, here are some guidelines:
There is one rule for emo hair (this mostly applies to girls, but might also help guys as well): Big top, smooth bottom. This basically means that you should spike up the top half of your hair whilst smoothing down the bottom half. Think contrast.
Fringe: Depending on what style of fringe you have, how you style it can vary. If you have a side-swept fringe, it is better to flatten it (if this is the case, make sure you push up the sides of your hair so its not all flat). If you have a straight across cut, the preference is yours (a little spike can go a long way, so don't overdo it)
For guys and girls with short hair: if you are really stuck, just run a hand UP through the back of your hair, so its really messy. From there, just start styling and flattening the various bits and pieces
For girls with medium/long hair: if you are impatient (like me), just grab the bottom half of your hair in one fist and mess/spike the top half. This way, the bottom half stays straight.
4 To have an interesting look, you could get streaks of colour, if you do this, make sure your parents are okay with the idea and that your school allows dyed hair. Make sure to always re-new the colour in your hair or else it will look bad. If your parents forbid you of getting streaks go buy extensions, if you cant find any coloured ones, get real-hair ones and dye them, and cut them to the length you want them.
Make sure that your hair is bigger by the top and middle but gets straighter and thiner by the bottom.
