groundfighting? I have a Shorin Ryu school in my city and I am trying to get a better understanding of it ahead of visiting it.

I understand it is one of the original or THE original Karate style from Okinawa. So, I see that it is a bit different than some of the newer styles. It seems to have more of a Chinese influence to it.

I was wondering, in your particular dojo, what did you learn in way of groundfighting?

Specifically:

- Did you learn how to attack and defend against an attacker standing above you (if you were knocked down to the ground someway) and/or to attack someone you knocked/threw to the ground?

- Did you learn how to deal with an attacker from a mount position (then straddled on your chest ready to throw punches at you)?

- Did you ever do any ne waza (ground grappling) type sparring?

- Did you learn any defenses in a groundfight where an attacker wrestles you to the ground?

I'm trying to see if Shorin-Ryu is more well-rounded in the different areas of fighting or is it mainly a "stand-up" style that deals with just striking while standing (like Kickboxing or Tae Kwon Do).

i have never trained in shorin ryu but shotokan and shorin are related my answer my school teaches some grappling techniques and we have a style of set kumite called iai which is practiced with both karatekas on their knees. So shorin and karate in general has adequate grappling and ground fighting and ground defense.
