Should a dryer vent duct become so hot that you can't almost hold it.?

Our old duct had been ripped and coming apart. I replaced it with a flexible duct that kind of looks like aluminum paper, after turning the dryer on, it sounded like allot of small pieces of scrap whizzing around and out the duct. I placed my hand on the duct to feel the slight vibration from this derby ( I guess it was derby ) and that's when I noticed that it was very hot to the point that there was no way to keep holding on without burring your hand. Is this normal because of this type of aluminum material ? Or did I mess something up when I had laid the dryer on its side for a short time till I was able to secure the duct on the dryer's outlet ? The outlet was near the bottom and I thought I would just lay it on it's side to make it easier and not have to bend over. Did I mess some thing up ?
