Should I be singing soprano or alto?

I am in a local show, and there weren't enough altos. So, when the director asked me what part I sang, I replied that I could do either, but I would be an alto if they needed more. I don't like being an alto, because I am a belter with a range that enables me to hit notes that some altos may not be capable of. The highest note for a female in the ensemble in the show is a Bb5, which I can hit, but not with quality as nice as some of the true sopranos. When we warm up and go up to D6s, though, I'm okay. Do you think that I could be a soprano in this show? I'm a teenage girl who classifies herself as a mezzo-soprano. The alto part is way too low for me. Do I need to work more to become a true soprano? I love to belt but I know I'll need some soprano talent if I want to sing melodies. Thanks!
