Should I close my Heater Vents in the Summer?

I live in NM, and we have a ventilation system that's hooked up to our heater, which we use in the winter. In the summer, we have small a/c units that are attached to our windows. Should we be closing out heating vents during the summer? It seems like our house is inordinately hot considering how much a/c we're pumping in.
