Should I get a Beach Cruiser or a District Bike?

I live in Tokyo and I would like to buy a bike that is suitable for the city so I could just cruise around, or go to school with. In Japan, "Pisto"/District bikes are currently very popular and also fast, but I like the style of Cruisers. In your opinion, which bike would be more suitable for Tokyo landscape? (There aren't a lot of hills here, but a lot of slopes.)
