The first thing I would say is that if you guy to a small SUV, you're going to notice a huge difference in fuel economy. I'm likely telling you what you already know there I guess, but something to think about given fickle gas prices.
That said, there are a lot of good choices. Rather than look at the Kia Sportage, maybe take a look at the Hyundai Sante Fe. Kia and Hyundai are the same company, but the Sante Fe is a better design. The CR-V is excellent, but a bit higher on the price scale. Other choices include the Ford Escape, a reliable SUV with a good reliability track record. The Hybrid version of the Escape would give you great gas mileage.
If you choose to go with a sedan, the Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, the new 2011 Hyundai Sonata, and the Ford Fusion are all excellent choices, and all have above average reliability.
I normally recommend some Toyota vehicles to my customers, but with all that is going on right now, just best to stay away until they work out their problems.
Take the time to drive as many vehicles as you want, and take them out for an hour or so. As I said earlier, there are so many good choices, take your time.
