Should I get Hermit Crabs or fish?

I was thinking of things to get for Christmas (because my mom wants my list this week) and I thought, hey, why not get a pet? But my mom said it can't cost alot and it cant smell, can't be a dog, cat, snake, lizard, any of that stuff. So I decided on either fish, or 2-4 hermit crabs. I've had fish before...I had about 13 glo-fish...they died fast. 2 of this black small fish. 1 gold fish. 1 black gold fish with puffy eyes, and a shark fish (but that died fast because well, when I went to transfer it from the store bag to my tank, I had to use a ladle because i couldn't find the net, well the shark kind of went all hey wire and flopped out of the ladle, and I was afraid to pick it up so it was flopping everywhere and I was screaming and my mom wouldn't come up stairs to help me. so it ended up dying...crazy story haha) they all died within about 5 months. So I've been thinking maybe I should get hermit crabs. I didn't know the proper care for fish, but I've been doing research for a week now on hermit crabs and I'm going to continue doing reasearch on whatever pet I end up getting until Christmas.

So, do you think I should get hermit crabs or fish? I've always wanted hermit crabs but my mom always said no. But now shes letting me for Christmas. What one do you think I should get and why? Please don't say anything that I shouldn't get anything because I went through about 20 fish okay? Thanks!

Hermit crabs as your history with fish doesn't sound too good lol. But thats just not it. I have five fish tanks and work with hermit crabs and fish are alot of money and work. They need filters, water, and such and this all adds to the bill.

All you need to do for a hermit crab set up is get a suitable size tank, about 18 by 18 inches. Sand on the bottom. Empty shells of different sizes it can use for new homes (they swap during their life). A heat mat on one end. Some hides and decor and food.

Compared to fish which need a tank with water, needs to be cycled, treated, water changes, etc

Hermits don't need water.
