The books and the show are pretty different. Honestly, the TV show is better, but people generally tend to love what they read or see first. If you are attached to the books, you might hate the series. If you saw the series first, you might hate the books. I LOVE the TV show. It's incredible. It's pretty violent, but I would say it's appropriate.
