Should I go with a foreign carrier when traveling abroad?

I plan to visit Canada in February and I was wondering if it would be better to fly Air Canada or go with an American Carrier instead. I heard that if I go with a foreign carrier and I get snowed in at the airport, the foreign carrier would be obligated to book me hotel room for the night. Is this true??
