Should i have to press the gas when i start my suv?

i got s 1987 Chevy blazer
its got a 2.8 fuel injected motor
Just from habbit after i turn the key i hit the gas petal
im not messin anything up by doing this am i?

It doesn't mess up anything, but you don't have to press the gas when starting a fuel injected engine.

You're not doing it any good. The engine needs a few seconds to get the oil flowing before you hit the gas.

Think of it this way. On a fuel injected car, things work backwards. The "gas" pedal is really the "air" pedal. All you are doing is exercising your foot, really. Gas is metered automatically, and the air follows suit. Hard starting indicates a dirty Idle AIr Control System. EASY to clean out, though. Good luck!!

You should not have to press on the gas to start your Blazer. Older cars with carburetors need this to be done to activate the choke. You have a throttle body that takes care of this automatically.

You shouldn't have to pump the gas unless it's got a carb.

If you've got you're foot on the gas when you start it you could be doing some damage. Revving the engine before oil has a chance to reach all of the critical parts is bad.

That's the old fashioned way of starting with a carburetor with an accelerator pump. It cased some fuel to be squirted into the intake manifold as it released the automatic choke. Fuel Injected engines don't have this kind of pump. The best way to start is to keep your feet away from the accelerator pedal and just crank it over.
