Should pupils have a say in what should be discussed in class?

I (German) had a discussion with my English boyfriend:
A lot of German school teachers would in higher classes (16-18 years old) let students vote on what subjects would be covered (from the subjects that were on the curriculum, of course). E.g. Out of 8 given subjects we'd choose 4 subjects to be covered over the 4 semesters leading up to A-Level. Now I believe this makes the student feel respected and appreciated and teaches them valuable life skills (decision making, experiencing voting on a small scale, dealing with being out voted etc); my bf thinks this wastes valuable lesson time, trying to decide, for instance, what book to read when the teacher could have made this decision for you.
Your opinion.
