Sims Card help for iPhone? D:?

Okay, well I'm going to get an iPhone, and I found that I could buy an iPhone from the Apple Store, but it will be locked. From what i understand, when a phone is locked, it means that you can only use it for a certain service provider, such as at&t. I have a phone already, so I already have my own Sims Card. Can I just switch my Sims Card to the phone so it can work?
