(Slightly) Speed up old VW beetle?

I am a teenager, and my first car is DEFINITELY going to be a VW beetle. However, the problem is I have to take many steep hills to and from school everyday, and the VW Beetle's 54hp engine would struggle getting up there, especially at the speed of the other cars. I was wondering, on a cheap budget, as I would most likely use a lot of my leftover money on a paint job or interior work, what can I do to just get that right amount of speed to go up the hills without having people honking at me from behind?
