It does work both ways, some people serve a fraction of the sentence, others serve a full term.

A friend of mine from university killed his best friend in a traffic accident. His lawyer and this family were expecting a soft sentence - slap on the bottom, community service, a fine.

He got four years and served the whole four years.

I've a 'friend' only served 6 for murder.
I read in a paper today of a woman that recieved 13 life sentances, the judge said at her trail that she should never be freed - she's up for parole now (link may follow)
They won't get what they deserve.

Now, THAT is a travesty. Only six years?? It seems like you get a longer sentence for tax evasion than you do for taking someone's life.

Sick, man. Sick. Six years for a life...

This was my original point about people getting 'a slap on the wrist'. I take it your 'friend' is getting on with his life, has a job, family, money, a home?? Meanwhile that poor taxi man's family are facing a 'life sentence' of their own...

wow that was getto.sadly stufff likes this hampens often but you only hear about it when somebody famous gets hurt. the whole situation is sad. some people chose to laugh like what the guy said on the other thread about the streets but it realy hampens mainly on the streets.last summer when i was living in LA. I can tell you story about a gospel event my brother was performing at. Two brothers were gonna perform at gosbel event and they got mistaken for some other people and they got drive byd right before the event. The older brother got shot while trying to protect his little brother. From what I heard the younger brother had good chance of living but the older brother was badly injured and might not live but nobody heard that story. there was 16 year old gilr shot by accident in gang thing. .also there was two car shot at eachother in the middle of the street. plus, a guy right down the street of where i was staying got shot and he died. don't even get me started on war and terroism.Sadly in reality alot of bad things hampen and it is a tragety.

Well okay, that kinda ruined my point, but the fact remains is that he's out and getting on with his life.

No justice.

I mean, I have lowlife friends who operate on the wrong side of the law but I doubt any one of them would take someone's life just like that.

The UK could do worse than bring back Gravelkind..A Welsh law system that was sadly squashed.

Briefly, when someone committed a crime, their seven nearest relatives would have to make amends.

So, if cattle were stolen, the seven would buy replacements.

If a murder took place, the seven would pay the widow/widower the equivalent of the deceased weekly wage...plus...do any tasks that would have been done. This lasted until the death of the widow/widower.

It had the knock on effect of families keeping a tighter rein on each other. The opposite of todays society where it is always 'someone elses fault'

in the US if they get life it means life normally as in how long they live they get to stay behind bars, in the UK life normally means 30 years, but the problem is unless they make the stipulation for them to stay behind bars for a set time before they can have parole they get it within 15 years, which to me is a joke.

as for understanding parole i don't truly understand it i don't happen to have a degree in law i am not a judge or a copper, so my understanding is slim.

one sentence for me if you do the crime prepare to do the time, not do the crime then prepare to get 30 years only to get out for being a good person after 15 to then proceeded to go back to crime straight away.

;-)

Well we can all thank our lucky stars that the Scots are ruling the country and not the Welsh then, that sounds like a completely ridiculous system that sets out to punish the innocent for the mistakes of the guilty.

It resulted in very, very little crime, and people took responsibility for themselves and their families actions. So a rogue member of a family would be controlled by those who would have to pay penance. Unlike today when someone can cause huge physical and financial damage and a pittance is paid to the victim.

Also known as 'keeping your own house in order'

But the whole idea is fundamentally flawed and I'll give a real life example to prove my point.

My brother is a bit of a **** and quite frankly I am playing down just how much of a **** he is to keep this believable. He goes out, gets drunk gets into fights, I strongly suspect he's into street robbery people as he has a tendency to 'find' items of value just lying around the place. It is only a matter of time before he finds himself in the nick or in the ground. Personally I'd prefer the nick because I hate funerals and I think my family would force me to attend. I could quite easily imagine him getting into a fight one day and killing the other guy, whether it be by accident or not.

Now by your system, I, along with my parents and sisters would be force to pay compensation to the victims family even though all my family has ever done is try to straighten him out, at times to significant financial loss. He just cant be disciplined and he cant be controlled, its never worked on him, not even when he was a toddler, if you tell him to do something there is a good chance he will do the other out of spite. So how would your system help him?

Disclaimer the above statement may or may not be true, and as such is inadmissable as evidence should by brother actually kill someone in the future

I agree, not telling him that though. Wife thinks it was 7 years not 6 (my mistake)

I've known worse, this guy is a bit twisted, you can just see it in him. He should be getting medical help / locked up. Doing what he did and being 100% normal, now thats nasty.

I kinda think that's a bit on the harsh side, his best mate had died at his hands!! So unless alcohol or something else like that was involved he's already going to be punishing himself over what happened...
