Smokeless tobacco alternatives of 2011?

I've been a heavy cigarette smoker for over 25 years now. I recently have been feeling an even more extreme unnerving and twitchy feeling through my body which is ABSOLUTELY a side effect of my smoking IMO. I know about the gum, patches, and even medication but I'm interested in the electronic cigarettes and need feedback. I did a bit of research on the design and concept seems innovative and appealing but I'm not sure if it is safe or worth purchasing?
I'm looking for advice from current electronic cigarette smokers whether its good or bad. What are the good local and online e cig brands?
