Snowmobile or snow machine??????

I know that this is old news and could have even been a question already on here, but whatever.
They say that in Alaska, they call them snow machines.
Makes them sound kind of stupid to me. I think of a snow machine as a machine that makes snow. So, they should obviously be called snowmobiles. Because they don't call the bat mobile the bat machine or the pope mobile the pope machine. Also we call them auto mobiles not auto machines.. Any one picking up what I'm putting down??

i think its just their own slang.

i'm canadian, we invented snowmobiles because some teenager got curious and put his parent's car's engine on a sled. its called the snowmobile and that's its official name.

i'd say its just slang in alaska.
