work for the people who catch him? he goes on to have a series of adventures the only one i can remember at the moment is him becoming a bodyguard for someone. Also i think he ends up on earth undercover near the end of the book
also im pretty sure it was printed pre 2000 so anything later than that is probably not it
 
You pretty much described a whole lot of Cyberpunk novels. Sounds a bit like Neuromancer, but I doubt that's it.
