I've had two bettas over the past 6-ish years, and my parents had a 10-gallon tank when I was little, but I really don't know much about fish. However, we have a cat who loves the betta, and I like fish, so I think it could be fun to try. I have a 10-gallon tank, heater if needed, filter, lights/hood. I also have chemicals that came with the tank (I bought a Top Fin starter kit from PetSmart) - stress coat and bacteria something. I do NOT have fish yet (because I don't know what I'm doing lol). I was wondering what people's recommendations would be? I asked my coworkers at PetSmart who told me I could have a max of 2 fish in a 10-gallon tank, but I remember we had neons and guppys and maybe zebra danios along with this one big black bugeyed fish (whom we called BugEye...go figure :P). I mean, we had more than 2 fish in that tank for SURE and it seemed to do perfectly fine. So what's the deal?
Can anyone recommend certain types of fish and amounts for a beginner? Thanks!

Read up on "cycling" your tank before you begin. I cant be arsed to explain this now :P

10 gallon would be about 8 small fish (For example a mixture of the following):

Danios
Tetras
Guppys
Minnows

You could also have 4-5 Female Bettas.

The best thing would be 6 of the smaller fish and then a golden sucking loach to keep the glass clean. You would need a heater at about 25/77
