So you want a Tattoo .....

That last concept got me so annoyed I didnt even manage to type properly! lol

Tattoos should ALL have some meaning to them. as long as its a personal meaning to the canvas, then thats cool - but ink for the sake of ink is moronic and should be beaten until they cry - which isnt going to take long.

While it is true that most tattoos should have meaning to a particular person there are those out there that "collect" certain artists work. When one buys a painting to hang on ones own house does it necessarily have to have a deep emotional/philosophical or other meaning? Can one not appreciate the art just for it's esthetic qualities?

If I want to have a dragon done buy Chris Garver (from Miami Ink fame and one of the greatest asian dragon tattooists in existence) I don't think it would be a terrible thing as long as it's something I would appreciate and be happy with my whole life.

Does personal have to mean an emotional deep meaning? A persons backside is personal but I don't suppose it has an emotional deep meaning for most.
For a tattoo to 'mean something' to you, it could simply be something you love very much, regarding a person, a hobby, a piece of art...it's still personal

speaking of which, this is the one i've decided on! my right shoulder or back of my left calf are the location options, haven't decided which one yet though!

Well then you're definition of "personal" just broadened. It now includes work for esthetic purposes.

Here is the definition of esthetic.

1.    pertaining to a sense of the beautiful or to the science of aesthetics.
2.    having a sense of the beautiful; characterized by a love of beauty.
3.    pertaining to, involving, or concerned with pure emotion and sensation as opposed to pure intellectuality.–noun
4.    a philosophical theory or idea of what is aesthetically valid at a given time and place: the clean lines, bare surfaces, and sense of space that bespeak the machine-age aesthetic.
5.    aesthetics.
6.    Archaic. the study of the nature of sensation.

So according to your now broadened definition. Esthetic tattoos are ok.

@tekken If you wear shorts a lot then I would say calf. Plus you can admire it without having to look in the mirror.

Love the article. I knew of all the other things that you are supposed to know before getting one but don't recall hearing to moisturize it.
Everyone I ever talked to said, "If your tattoo does scab don't touch it; don't pick it." Never heard how to prevent it.

Thanks for the info.

What tattoo to get?
Get something that means a lot to you. Or something that describes you.
Choosing a tattoo will force you into a commitment. You'll be having that for a LONG time. Okay, you could get it erased but, come on, that's a lot of money.

Then by all means state what you mean because it seems to me you're just talking in circles now.

Ditto.
The only problem with that is, picking the scab is one of the best parts

Morning Max

Talking in circles?

My definition of personal has never changed. Though I did take on board your comment:

As well as all the other comments you've made.

I believe the original point here was:

Since then you've thrown quite a few points in which have lead to the discussion changing direction slightly.

I don't know about circles, but you're making me dizzy

Ok, what I'd class as personal in this context - Something that means something to you. Whether it's something that has emotional meaning, or simply something eg hobby related that you truly love.

From the original point, I don't consider waking up one morning, thinking 'I think I'll have a tattoo' then browsing through art folders down your local tattoo parlour for someone else's design 'that looks pretty', to be personal. It's having a tattoo for the sake of having a tattoo.

I met a guy once that had "SNIKS"

Tattooed on his forehead.

When asked what it means, I was told that he had done it himself in the mirror, and that is was "SKINS", but backwards!

Thus proving Darwin was wrong!

Several months later I saw the same guy again, but this time he had a big green oblong on his forehead where he had had it covered!

65 million years of evolution got him to this point!
Scary!!!!!!!!!

The original point was was if a tattoo had to have some emotional or philosophical "meaning".

"When one buys a painting to hang on ones own house does it necessarily have to have a deep emotional/philosophical or other meaning?"

To which you responded that you can take a painting down.

The point I was making was that not all tattoos necessarily have to have some meaning to them. As long as the collector can appreciate/admire the art for a lifetime then it's fine.

A prime example is tribal art. In reality very few tribal designs will have some type of "meaning" to the collector. Most of the time tribal designs are more for "cosmetic" effect like jewelry. But are they art work that the collector can appreciate for a life time? I would say so.
