I added the salt treatment for my pond all at once (about 10-15 tsp in a "supposedly" 60 gallon pond) on Sunday. 3 goldfish without ich ended up dying (one was still alive when I awoke early in the morning, but it looked like the salt burned it or something, and it died in the afternoon). The other goldfish that do have ich (and are much smaller - about the size of 10 cent feeder fish) survived, along with all the koi, small and big. The previous day, I added about two or three tsp, and everything was fine - nothing died.
So I'm guessing that either the goldfish died from the sudden large amounts of salt as a result of stress, suffocation, or too much salt (the fish that survived when I woke up looked like it had been burned; its fins were all whitish and fading, and its eyes and skin were losing color. It was also barely able to swim, and used only its tail).
I want to remove some of the salt just in case I put too much. Currently, when I get up a cup of the pond water, I can see it filled with about 10%-15% salt. Is that supposed to be normal? I'm scared that my other ich weakened goldfish end up dying too. I've been skimming some of the surface water with a bowl daily, removing some of the salt. Is this pointless?
The water I skim off ends up being about three or four 1.8/3 gallons, but I replace with tap water that has been left out a few days ago to hold the water plants (I don't add too much of the new water because I do not have dechlorinator or ammonia and nitrate cleaners. I'm scared too much would make things worse).
So my questions are:
Do you think I put too much salt?
Will the golfish survive with the salt amounts (they goldfish are very very small).
And what could've happened to the goldfish that ended up looking like it was burned by the salt?
Thanks if anyone answers!
