Hey guys,
I know that guinea pigs need vitamin C. I would like to know:
1. What are all the vitamins and nutrients that is essential to a guinea pig's diet?
2. Can a guinea pig eat pine needles?
3. Would pine needles provide all of the Vitamin C that a guinea pig needs?
4. Could a guinea live healthfully only eating pine needles and grass (assuming that water is available)

Thanks for answering these questions.

PINE NEEDLES ARE RICH IN VITAMIN C!
What if I grind up the pine needles. Pine needles are high in vitamin c. I need to know what kinds of vitamins and nutrients (like protien or fiber) are essential to their diet.

1.) Sorry, I don't know all of them...

2.) I wouldn't suggest it...

3.) Definitely not!

4.) You need guinea pig pellets. They will give much more V. C.

Go to http://www.guinealynx.info/
It should give you all of the information.

1. What are all the vitamins and nutrients that is essential to a guinea pig's diet? It's found anywhere. In their fruit and vegetables you feed them, their pellets and their timothy hay. Please do not use vitamin drops in their water (I know you don't but I am just saying).

2. Can a guinea pig eat pine needles? No, they are hard and could hurt their mouths. They need a good set of veggies daily to be eating, 1/4th of a cup of pellets and unlimited hay (preferably timothy hay).

3. Would pine needles provide all of the Vitamin C that a guinea pig needs? Absolutely not! You need to be feeding your guinea pigs the right amount of foods. A guinea pigs diet consists of:

* 70% Timothy hay
* 20% Pellets
* 10% vegetables and fruit

4. Could a guinea live healthfully only eating pine needles and grass (assuming that water is available)? If you want a sick guinea pig? Then no. They need all of the above. Pine needles aren't necessary for their diet. They could get hurt eating them and they could be dangerous.

Never feed your guinea pig pine needles. Pine needles don't even have Vit C in them. Guinea pigs get their Vit C with from their pellets and veggies. Make sure you have a healthy pellet with Vit C added into it. Do not give them a pellet with any of the extra seeds and junk in it either. Piggies absolutely CANNOT live off of grass and pine needles.

Read that link over for the sake of your piggy!

EDIT: NO THEY ARE NOT! Pine needles are not ment to be eaten period, thats exactly like eating the needles off a cactus! I don't care if you grind them up DO NOT feed them to your guinea pig! You keep asking what's vital for them, READ the link I provided to you!

A guinea pig's diet is almost complete by feeding it quality guinea pig pellets. However, because guinea pigs cannot make their own Vitamin C the way other animals can, they need a constant supply to keep them healthy and to prevent scurvy (much like humans). Feed him lots of leafy greens such as red bell peppers, kale, romaine lettuce (not iceberg), and parsley, as well as a small amt. of fruits (treat only--occasionally) such as apple and oranges/clementines. I have no idea whether a guinea pig would or could eat pine needles, but I would never feed my own piggie pine needles. I would be afraid of him choking on those!!
Your guinea pig also needs lots of fiber in the form of unlimited grass hays, Timothy hay/Orchard grass etc. The finer and less sharp, the better--the rougher kinds can cause a potential eye injury. He needs it to keep his digestive tract in working order. You can also feed him grass from your lawn, providing it has not been treated with chemicals etc. and is protected from animal droppings.
