Someone explain to me why cellphone prices/plans are so ridiculous in Canada?

Prices are outrageous and there seems to be no letup from any of the providers. In fact, it will probably get worse as they try to keep afloat in the midst of this economic crisis.
Why oh why can't we have good deals like in the US or even Mexico?!!
