Sometimes when I transfer a VHS tape to dvd...?

The quality is alittle bad on some scenes on the dvd copy. But on the VHS tape the quality is good in the scene when it isn`t on dvd. How can I fix this? It seems to effect dark scenes so it isn`t clear on dvd but is on vhs.
