What song has the lyrics mentioned above? It's a pretty well known song, and I hate myself for not knowing it.

Also, I think it has the lyrics "Generally spoken, generally spoken" or "gently spoken"

Does anybody know what song I'm talking about?

Apparently there's a song called "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam, that contains the lyrics "He hit me with a surprise left" which is very similar to the line you put in the question. Unfortunately, I don't see the words "Generally spoken" or "gently spoken" anywhere in the song...

Listen to Jeremy by Pearl Jam and see if that's what you're thinking about.
