I have a Motorola Starchoice HDTV Receiver. I don't have DVR on it but when I go into options I have the option of DVR list, but it's grayed out.

I was wondering, can I just buy the part I need for the DVR, or is there someway to just hook up an external hardrive? I noticed theres a usb port on the back of the receiver. Or am I just going to have to get a new receiver if I want the DVR?

Not on the current model, the DSR 505. You see that menu, because the 505 and 530 (the actual current DVR) use the same software.

Right now, there is supposedly a new HD-DVR coming by fall this year (the DVR 630), and a new non DVR HD receiver (the DSR605).

The 605 is supposedly to have a feature where you can plug in a USB or eSATA drive to make it into a single tuner DVR, but there are no promises on that.

You could get a DSR530 now (which is a glorified VCR, with one recording tuner, the other a live TV tuner, and the big update promised abandoned) but in a couple years they are to change the HD format so only the 6xx receivers will get HD, and the 505/530 will only get Standard Def channels.
