My stereo turns itself off above a certain volume. I figured it was just old so I replaced the receiver but the new one does the same thing. It doesn’t matter what input is in use (CD player, radio, IPod jack), the same thing happens. There is no amplifier/equalizer or other power add-on. The same 4 speakers that are on there now have been on for the last 5 years.

Any ideas?

Most all stereos have a protect circuit that shuts them down if the output load begins to draw too much current. If you have replaced your stereo receiver with a new one and it too is shutting down, then one or more of your speakers is the problem. You can read them with an OHM meter and you may find that one or more reads too low. For home speakers they should read about 8 OHMs and in some rare cases maybe 4 OHMs, but anything less is a "cooked" voice coil. If any one of the 4 reads less than the other 3 then that is most likely the problem.
