Steven Hawkins in space...

Fact is if he wasn't wheelchair bound there is a chance that at some point during his career he would have gone into space in a professional capacity. So rather than going to space for free he would have been paid for it.

And he hasn't had a 'free ride to space' exactly where you got that from I dont know.

That's not a point. It's an opinion. And a pretty un-educated one at that.

For example, his book was on the best-sellers list for 237 weeks. How many people thought 'oh, he's in a wheelchair so I'll buy his book'?

Ok then free ride to upper atmosphere, it dosen't matter you knew what i meant. Also it's not a fact. There are plenty of people who study space and never go there for the simple reason, Studying Space = Nerd= Physicaly weak.

Steven wasn't exactly in great shape before he had to go into a wheel chair.

What the hell sort of reply is that?

I don't mind a discussion but please use valid points in future.

The main reason most of them don't go into space is because they lack the necessary military training. Most astronauts come from military backgrounds such as jet fighters. They are trained to handle the forces placed on their body.

I'm sure given the necessary training a 'nerd' could become an astronaut. They just spend their lives learning about space instead of jets. It's only in recent years that civilians have been allowed, so you can expect in the future lots more nerds to go into space.

I'm kind of wondering why we are fighting about whether or not he gets free rides? He has a logical reason for wanting to go up into space, it's not about the free rides or I don't think he would careless about spending his money on the ride, he really wants to basically leave this world. He thinks that we really have no future, "meaning he thinks the future either way is gonna be bad for us sometime whether we would like it or not" and he wants most of us to follow his path.

As I said in the previous post.

As for going out into space. There is no reason to be called nerds and being mentioned as pysically weak. I don't know where you came up with that bull crap Kralk.

You should maybe stop joking around too.

you dont seem to understand what a nerd is. Hardly surprising considering the lack of intelligence you have demonstrated thus far.

..and 28000 ft is hardly the upper atmosphere genius.

I'd say 25% of people know of him because of his work

75% of people know of him because he has a funny voice box.

IMO I think if you ask people what he studies they will say space.

It dosen't matter how high up it is im not claming to be an expert. All I said was I doubt he would get a free ride if he wasn't in a wheelcahir you people need to chill the **** out.

Depends on the type of astronaut. I believe all pilot/coofftopicnder astronauts have flown fighter jets. But a good number of mission specialist astronauts are civilians. That said, all astronauts must pass a fairly stringent physical, be within height/weight bounds, have good vision, etc.

Considering that most astronauts, even the pilots, have Ph.D.'s, it could be argued that all astronauts are "nerds". They're also all in good physical shape.

No no no no NO!!!

This isn't what this thread was intended for! After all Hawkins has contributed to science and it turns into a discussion on whether or not he should go into space in a wheel chair and petty arguments???Bad!

Lets face it, you could create a thread about homeless orphans being given a cuddly toy for christmas and someone on this board would object.
